CAFÉ

Follow Your Heart Café first opened in 1970 as a 7-seat vegetarian sandwich and juice bar, two blocks from our current location. It consisted only of the curved counter - still in use today - and tucked into the corner of Johnny Weissmuller’s American Natural Foods.

We have now evolved into our 67-seat restaurant, offering a now fully vegan menu. The wooden decor of our restaurant lends itself to the warm, community feeling for which we are so famous. You can dine at one of our tables inside, or out on the relaxing patio, or on the counter with our “regulars.” The counter is an especially unique part of the cafe experience, and many a friendship has begun as a result of a chance encounter here.

MENUS

  • Follow Your Heart Market & Café has implemented an Optional 5% Service Fee on all restaurant checks to help provide a competitive living wage and benefits package for our back-of-house staff (i.e., chefs, cooks, and dishwashers). These valued team members do not receive any portion of the gratuity you may choose to designate for your server.

    We understand that no one likes to pay additional fees and want to highlight three issues:

    (1) the Service Fee is not mandatory and you may ask to have it removed;

    (2) the back of house staff cannot participate in tips; and

    (3) the Service Fee allows a way for us to provide an additional incentive to those who work hard to create, prepare and maintain the quality of the food we serve you so that they are on a more equal footing with those team members who interact with you face to face (and are eligible to receive tips). We value all our team members and they all work together to provide you with your meal experience. We want to address the imbalance regarding those who receive tips and those who do not, as we believe this makes it difficult to recruit and retain the best people to do these essential back-of-house jobs.

    Why not just raise menu prices?

    Because we have always valued transparency — both with our customers and our team members. We think it is better to separate the categories of these costs for better transparency, just as we do with tips. With a separate service fee, your restaurant check will reflect the charges for your food and beverages prior to the service fee being added. This way, should you wish to leave a tip, you will not be adding your gratuity tot the value of the service fee (which you likely would if all costs were combined into higher menu prices).

    Ultimately, we feel strongly that the quality of the experience we can offer you is completely dependent on the caliber of the people we rely on to produce it. We hope you agree with us that they deserve it, but if you would like this Service Fee removed while dining with us, please speak with your cashier at checkout.

    The Service Fee is not a tip. Just as before, you may still leave your server a tip or gratuity at the time of checkout. Any and all tips go directly to your server.
